Boxing up your belongings for time in self storage can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. If you are getting ready to pack up your things for storage, we’ve got some helpful tips for you to follow that will extend the life of the items. Keep in mind, medium boxes are very easy to pack, but may not hold larger items, or items with unique shapes.
It is always a good idea to keep items from the same room, or area, of your house in the same box. First, put some packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or bubble wrap in the bottom of your box to create a protective layer. This also helps keep your items clean if they pick up dirt while in transit.
Place heavier items in the bottom of the box, and group items of similar size, and weight. Make sure to wrap any fragile parts. Lighter items can be placed on top, as long as there is no way they will damage the heavier items at the bottom. Before closing the box, cushion the package with extra packing peanuts, or paper, to make sure your items are protected on all sides. Pots, pans, and other durable items do not need much protection, but you may want to secure the area around them so your items cannot shift.
The sweet spot for packing boxes is between 25lbs and 30lbs, and any over or under-packing could be dangerous to you, and your things. Close your box and secure it with tape. After securely closing your box, label it with the contents, or create an inventory as you go, and number your box. If your box contains fragile items, it is always a good idea to write “Fragile” on at least two sides. Look into buying a glass packing kit if necessary.
