Colby: This was your year-one anniversary, wasn't it?
Brittany: Yes, it was. It’s very exciting! It’s crazy how fast the time went by during my first year.
Colby: What made you decide to work for A-1?
Brittany: I was a college student at the time and I needed a job. I was working at a retail store and I just wanted to change it up a little bit. I wanted to look into different fields, specifically working in an office. I was looking on Craigslist and I came across A-1 Self Storage.
What really caught my attention was that the company is very supportive of the educational system, it was family built, and I just thought that was really awesome. I went ahead and applied to see what it was all about. I got the job and I never regretted it!
Colby: What's the best thing you have learned in the last year working at A-1 Self Storage?
Brittany: I have learned how to communicate with a diverse group of individuals. I really enjoy working with people. When you are able to communicate with a range of people and different personalities, you learn how to not only communicate, you learn how to form reflexes to know how to deal with situations and learn how to talk to people in different ways, and I have built that skill up.
I did it in retail in the past, but it's just such a different environment. These are personal belongings, these are valuables and, of course, they are going to take it a little more seriously. No matter if times are rough or good, I just really have to relate to people: be happy when they're happy, be sad when they're sad, and do whatever I can to help them with their valuable items.
Colby: Do you have a favorite story you like to tell when you are talking about work? Any funny stories? Anything heartwarming?
Brittany: The best experience that I have had here is making friends. I enjoy my job because of my tenants. As far as communication goes, you build a bond, in a sense, where they can count on you and you can count on them, and, for me, that's been very rewarding.
I have people come in all the time and say, “You know, we saw your reviews online and they were very high and we just want to compliment you, because we got exactly what we expected from your customer service.” Those experiences are very rewarding, you know?
Colby: For sure. Stepping away from work, what are your favorite hobbies when you aren't at the facility?
Brittany: I like to enjoy time with my family, my son in particular. He is my world. I'm also in the process of going to school, so education for both of us is really important as well.
Colby: Oh cool, where are you going to school?
Brittany: Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Colby: What is your favorite thing to do in town?
Brittany: I have lived here for about 5 years, I don't live in town, but when I am in town I like to go to the Paramount Drive-In. I don't know any other one around nearby, so that's fun. I like to visit the swap meet down the street. It's very active on Tuesdays, so that's always enjoyable. Everyone encourages you to go and you always see people there.
Colby: What is your favorite restaurant up in the city?
Brittany: I was actually just talking to my manager about that. My go-to restaurant has to be Mariscos El Perihuegute. It's off of Paramount and Harris. It's Hispanic seafood, so they have a variety of tacos, to shrimp plates, to crab meat.
Colby: Last question, would you like to give a shout-out to anybody at A-1 Self Storage?
Brittany: I would like to give a shout-out to my manager, Patricia. She has helped me in so many ways. I have gained a friend and confidant in her. We learn from each other, you know? It's not always fun and games, but you've got to manage a facility and a team. I have learned here that team is number one and being able to count on your teammates is important, because you back each other up and find a way to manage the floor.
