Self Storage Milestone: Happy 1-Year Anniversary to Jeff!

Here at A-1 Self Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our customers is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with Jeff, who is celebrating his 1-year anniversary with A-1 Self Storage.

Jeff works at A-1 Self Storage in Midtown San Diego, CA.

Shannon: What year anniversary is this for you?

Jeff: First year!

Shannon: Nice! What kind of jobs did you have before working in self storage?

Jeff: Before this, I was working in hotels as a receptionist. I was involved with a lot of customer service.

Shannon: I see. How did you start working in self storage?

Jeff: My friend, Leo, referred me to HR. Then after that, I was waiting for a few months. Eventually Brian L. Caster called me for an interview.

Shannon: Did anything surprise you about the self storage industry?

Jeff: I guess a lot actually. I am used to a customer service environment, and here in storage there’s a lot of that, and also some similar processes. However, doing collections on units that don’t pay rent is very, very new for me.

Shannon: Interesting! What is the most important thing that you’ve learned while working this year in self storage?

Jeff: I like the team work here when running the store. If we don’t have a unit available, we’ll suggest other locations for them to go to. So we all work together. If I’m working alone, and I have any questions, I just call the managers at the other locations to help me out.

Shannon: Of course, that’s great. Along the same lines, who has been the most helpful in answering questions about the job as you’ve been going through your first year?

Jeff: Right now, the one who is always helping me is Emma at the Downtown Location. She is the only manager who works Sunday and Monday, which is when I work.

Shannon: Do you have an example of a time she helped you out?

Jeff: Yeah! For example, I didn’t have access to the in-store specials, so I just asked Emma to change that for me. That was very helpful for me.

Shannon: That sounds very helpful! Is there anything you wished you would have known before working in self storage?

Jeff: The only thing I should have done was to research more about self storage. That way I would have known more going in, so it wasn’t so new to me. It took me a while to master the process.

Shannon: Doing research before hand is always good! But you’re happy that you ended up here?

Jeff: Oh, yes!

Shannon: Haha, okay, good! Compared to where you are at now, how was your life one year ago?

Jeff: One year ago, I was just dealing with different people from different countries, and business people. All I had to worry about was check in and check out, and billing people. In storage, it’s a long-term relationship as opposed to hotels where people may only be staying for a few days.

Shannon: How have you liked that more “long-term” interaction?

Jeff: I like it! Some people come here almost every day. Then we get to hear some of their stories as well, so it’s fun!

Shannon: Right on. Is there anyone, customer or team member, that has made an impact on you over the past year?

Jeff: I think in terms of team members, Leo. Leo has always been helping me here, because we are together here at this location. If I don’t know something, he always helps me out. Also, Darlene from Hotel Circle trained me and I still ask her questions. Emma also, from the Downtown location!
