Self Storage Milestone: Happy 17-Year Anniversary to Kevin!


Here at A-1 Self Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our customers is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with team member Kevin, who is celebrating his 17-year anniversary with A-1 Self Storage.

Shannon: What year anniversary is this for you?

Kevin: Year 16, going on 17! 

Shannon: Wow that’s great! Have you spent your entire time at the facility in Alhambra?

Kevin: Pretty much yes, since 2001. 

Shannon: Has your job changed since you started? 

Kevin: As far as the position? No. But some of the roles have changed since then. When I first started working with the company, I was a floater. That was a position where I would go to different stores throughout the week, to provide cover support to different managers at different locations. That gave me the opportunity to learn the business quicker. I also learned management techniques that each store does on a regular basis, and also working with different clientele. It gave me a feel for how this company operates at each location.

Shannon: Interesting. But I’m curious; how did you get into self storage? 

Kevin: Through a job agency. I applied for customer service at Remedy agency, and they just tallied up my experience on my resume and tallied up what was available on the computer. Then she asked if I would be interested in storage, because there is this company called A-1 Self Storage that is actually conducting interviews today. 

Shannon: Wow, nice. 

Kevin: Of course I had to have transportation, which I did, so I interviewed within an hour of learning about the job, and that’s how it started.

Shannon: Good deal. Over the years is there one thing, or a few things, that you’ve found to be the key to being successful in self storage? 

Kevin: Well basically whatever you do in life, customer service is a very big thing. Especially in the self storage industry. As you kind of learn over time that you’ll deal with people of all walks of life, who have a level of customer service that they expect wherever they go. Storage is no exception to that. 

Shannon: What makes you want to continue working at A-1 Self Storage?

Kevin: I like the environment that Caster Properties has provided for the employees over the years. They have safety meetings, many events where you can win incentives, and they have a positive working environment. I like the fact that they recognize their employees. Not only for anniversaries, but also each store is eligible to be Facility of the Month. This is based on how they performed, and how they maintained their store, and how they treated their customers. They also are doing 401K and vision benefits, which a lot of employers aren’t doing any more. I like the stability that the job offers, I like the positive working environment, and I like the fact that they are dedicated to keeping the property up. 

Shannon: That is a lot of good things! It sounds like you really enjoy working for the company. What advice would you give someone who is interested in working for A-1 Self Storage?

Kevin: Be people friendly, be reliable, and not just for your employer. But also for your customer. Customers are reliant on you, so you have to be attentive to their needs. Be professional and friendly. Customer service goes a long way. If you do this, people will come to you. It’s not the prices that draw people in. It’s the environment of professionalism, and positivity that draw people in. They’re gonna tell their friends, “Hey, this is the place to go. Regardless of their price, I would rather go there.” 

Shannon: That’s great advice and very true. Shifting gears a little bit, I would like to talk about you outside of storage. What do you like to do outside of work?

Kevin: I like going to the beach and watching movies like everybody else! I like being outdoors. That’s what’s nice about living in southern California, you get to do a lot of outdoor activities. You can see a lot of things outdoors without breaking your wallet. When you do that it’s also easier to talk to customers. I also like to travel out-of-state, that also helps me connect with customers more easily. It shows them that you’re a human being, too.
