Here at A-1 Self Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with team member Phyllis Bacek, who is celebrating her 18-year anniversary with A-1 Self Storage.
You can meet Phyllis at A-1 Self Storage in El Cajon, California.
Peter: So how long have you been with A-1 Self Storage?
Phyllis: Eighteen years.
Peter: Wow, that is incredible! How did you find out about A-1?
Phyllis: I was here from New Jersey. I actually found a little tiny ad in the newspaper for sales, so I called and interviewed and here I am. I was at a different facility for the first nine months and then I became manager here.
Peter: Eighteen years in self storage! Wow! Is there anything specific you would say you have learned in the self storage industry?
Phyllis: The whole process was new to me at the beginning. I would say I learned you have to be very aware of everyone's account because you are dealing with people's property and that can get complicated over time. So you have to be proactive.
Peter: Do you have any stories about the self storage industry you tell people when they ask about your job?
Phyllis: The funny thing is I have been in storage so long that most of my friends are in storage. No particular story sticks out, but I have seen people meet here and get married. I have a young girl who is renting here that I have known since she was a little girl when her mom rented from us. I will tell you this: I have been doing this for 18 years and almost every time I go into town to go shopping I will run into someone who used to rent with me.
Peter: What are some of your hobbies that you do when you aren't at work?
Phyllis: Gardening, of course, for me. I guess I have a lot of hobbies. I have three great grandsons and a great granddaughter. I would say they are kind of my full-time hobbies.
Peter: That's beautiful. What types of things do you take them out to do?
Phyllis: Their ages are a lot different. We go to the movies, but here in El Cajon there is always something going on. There are petting zoos, parades, learning activities for kids, and those are a lot of things you can do. It's really nice. There's always something going on. The area has grown a lot in the past few years.
Peter: What are some of your favorite restaurants around town to eat at?
Phyllis: When I am not working, I typically cook at home and I have a house full of kids, so there's always something cooking up.
Peter: Do you have any go-to recipes that you guys love to make?
Phyllis: Yeah, but they are all secret recipes, Peter! Nice try! In all seriousness, it really depends on what kids are in the house. Some of them will eat anything. Mexican food is a big hit with the kids.
Peter: That sounds great! What initially brought you to El Cajon from the East Coast?
Phyllis: My God Parents and cousins lived here and when my son went to college I decided I wanted to move to California. So I talked to my family about living in California and, needless to say, I didn't get much resistance from the kids. I have a lot of family all over California. I worked in Manhattan for 17 years, so I got accustomed to waking up at 4 AM and searching for hours for the right car. Sometimes people here complain when it rains, but I am a little more used to having to dig my car out from snow, so the rain is a delight.
Peter: Is there anyone on the A-1 Self Storage team you would like to give a shout out to?
Phyllis: The young man I used to work with for 10 years was Patrick Russo. He became a floater now, so he goes to all the stores. He is the closest friend I have made over the years, super hard working, and a really smart young man. He is really going to go places!
