Self Storage Milestone: Happy 2-Year Anniversary to Justin!

Here at A-1 Self Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our customers is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with Justin, who is celebrating his 2-year anniversary with A-1 Self Storage.

You can meet Justin at A-1 Self Storage in Downtown San Diego.

Shannon:  Hi, Justin. What year anniversary is this for you?

Justin: This is going to be my second.

Shannon: What were you doing before self storage?

Justin: Before self storage I was actually a student at a school out in Texas.

Shannon: Really? Cool! What school were you at?

Justin: I was at West Texas A&M. It’s a division two.

Shannon: Okay, what did you end up getting your degree in?

Justin: I got a Bachelor’s in Business.

Shannon: Cool! Did you have any related jobs in storage or were you just doing the school thing primarily?

Justin: I was just doing the school thing, mostly because I was playing baseball for them. I had summer jobs here and there just to get money, but I was mostly living off scholarships.

Shannon: Interesting! I’m curious then, how did you end up in storage?

Justin: I happened to live very near the head of HR, Barbara Culver. She told me that the Casters were hiring, so she told me to apply. I updated my resume and sent it over!

Shannon: Was there anything that surprised you once you got into self storage? Did you know anything about it before you applied?

Justin: No I didn’t know too much about it, but what did surprise me was how big of a business it is in California. You don’t think about it, but a lot of people have too much stuff and don’t know what to do with it!

Shannon: Haha, yes that’s true! What is the most interesting thing that you’ve learned since working in self storage?

Justin: The most interesting thing for me was working in Downtown, and dealing with the cars. I’m very much a mechanical kind of guy. I’ve rode dirt bikes and pit cars. Seeing the types of cars that people can afford is pretty cool.

Shannon: I see. Do you help customers with some of their cars? Sounds like you might be a little bit of a “gear head” so to speak!

Justin: I’m kind of a gear head at home, but we don’t do a whole lot of mechanical service here on cars. We do help our customers move their cars, make sure they are running, and taken care of. We get to see a lot of high end cars that you wouldn’t normally see.

Shannon: Wow, they are lucky to have someone like you who knows how to handle and work on cars!

Justin: It’s definitely interesting.

Shannon: For sure. Who has been the most helpful at answering questions you’ve had about the job?

Justin: Initially I would say Barbara Culver. She told me about the job because I had a lot of school debt. She helped me in the beginning. Then it was Brian Louis after that, because I was a floater at nine different stores for the first year. He helped me a lot through that, along with the managers at all of the different locations. Now that I work with Emma, it’s easy to just ask her whenever I have a question.

Shannon: Nice. It sounds like A-1 has a very team oriented culture. Can you speak to that?

Justin: Oh yeah, definitely. Just because I work in one district, I’ve worked with almost all of the managers in this district. Even if I have a question that my boss can’t get to right away, I can talk to anyone of the managers, or employees in the district and they have no problem helping me.

Shannon: Wow, that’s great. Have there been any memorable moments during your time with A-1 Self Storage that you can share?

Justin: There are a couple different customers here that store vehicles, and we’ll just say that they are well off, and they are some of the most respectful people I’ve ever met in my life.

Shannon: Really? What do you mean?

Justin: I mean just every time they come in they are happy to see us. Some people that are up in the higher class, they may talk down to you or talk differently to you. But then there are those few people that even though they are well off, they still treat us with respect, and know that we are going to take care of their vehicles in the same way that they would.

Shannon: That’s fantastic. I assume you appreciate that.

Justin: Oh yeah, it makes the job much easier depending on how nice they are, compared to the other people that make this job very trying.

Shannon: Yeah, I’m sure you see all different kinds of people that come through there. Is there anyone you would like to make a shout out to?

Justin: There’s no one really specifically, because everyone is just really helpful. Whether that be my boss, not my boss, or the employees everyone is really nice!
