Self Storage Milestone: Happy 2-Year Anniversary to Leo!

Shannon: Hi, Leo! You have been with A-1 Self Storage for 2 years, correct?

Leo: Mmhm’! 

Shannon: What can you tell me about the job or jobs you had before self storage?

Leo: I was a nurse for a year. Then the job that I had was in insurance, and I was involved in corporate investment, life insurance, healthcare. It is definitely different here, because I was there for 19 years. I was a division head, but it was very stressful because you have to deal with people, but the money was good as well.

Shannon: How does self storage compare to those jobs?

Leo: I believe it’s different because self storage is so easy. Although you have the same specifications in terms of sales, it’s easier because it’s just about moving in and moving out. The stress level in insurance where I was, on a scale of 1-5, was a 5. In self storage it’s only a 2. 

Shannon: Oh, wow! That’s really a change!

Leo: Yeah, I’m really happy about that!

Shannon: How did you start working in self storage?

Leo: I was actually referred to Brian L. Caster by Darlene. I was working with RICO before and they were going to assign me to some far location, and I said no way I was going to drive that far. It’s very stressful traveling. So when I was referred to Brian Louis I said “I am available, give me a call! Let’s do an interview!” 

Shannon: Right! That’s a great story!

Leo: He was looking at my resume and said I should be in a Manager’s position. 

Shannon: So you ended up going straight into a management position? 

Leo: Yes, but actually the management position wasn’t quite open, so it took a while. I told Brian Louis it was okay if I was not a Manager for a while, that I would be okay as a trainee. I said if you can take me as a trainee now then you can have me as a Manager ha! I don’t have to wait, and you don’t have to wait! 

Shannon: That’s some good sales right there!

Leo: Yes!

Shannon: What is the most important thing you’ve learned from working in self storage?

Leo: It’s the same thing as when I did insurance. It’s all about patience and how to serve people. You have to understand all different types of personalities. 

Shannon: That makes sense! Who has been most helpful in answering questions you’ve had about the job over the past two years?

Leo: Actually the one who was most helpful was Brian Louis, because he was my Area Manager before. Every time before I go to him, I would go to Darlene though. But now that she’s unavailable I go to him! Of course, Dave as well, if Brian Louis or Darlene are not there. Dave is the kind of person that when you ring his phone you don’t even have to wait. One ring or two rings and BOOM, you have to be ready with your questions! Haha. 

Shannon: That’s great! For my last question, I am wondering if there is anything you wish you would have known before getting into self storage?

Leo: I would have liked to have known the numbers better, so I could explain to customers why each of the units were priced the way they were. That would have helped.
