Self Storage Milestone: Happy 25-Year Anniversary to Fran Lomibao!

Here at A-1 Self Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our customers is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with Fran Lomibao, who is celebrating her 25-year anniversary with A-1 Self Storage.

You can meet Fran at A-1 Self Storage in La Mesa on Spring Street

Peter: So how long have you worked with A-1 Self Storage?

Fran: I have been here since 1993.

Peter: 1993! Wow so that's 25 years! That's incredible, congratulations!

Fran: I have been at this facility since 2014. Before that, I was the marketing manager. I have really come full circle. I was in-store, then I went into corporate, and now I am back managing the stores. I have kind of seen it all. I was kind of the old school marketing manager and now that social media is a big part of that, it is a little out of my realm.

Peter: Yeah, it changes everyday. The second you think you understand it--you don't. Wow 25 years, that's a testament to the company I would say, right?

Fran: Oh absolutely. They are like family. They have really good values and they reward people who work hard. I plan on working here until I retire. It's a great job. Our CEO for example is awesome. He is so down to earth, everyone calls him Brian.

Peter: Oh, that's right. When I first got involved with A-1 everyone told me you call him by his first name. That is a down-to-earth CEO. I have heard that from a lot of people here at A-1 Self Storage.

Fran: I am sure I am not the only one who feels that way.

Peter: After 25 years, you probably have a lot of stories. Are there any good stories that come to mind that you like to tell people?

Fran: My background is in customer service and I like to help people, and at this job I don't feel like I am selling, I am really getting to help people. People are always in transition when they get storage. Whether it's losing a house, or job, or parent, I kind of provide them some help to get them through it. It might seem small but it helps them focus on what matters, not storage, and hopefully helps them move on. That's the best part of my job is getting to feel like I am making a difference for someone in a real way.

Peter: Wow, and you have probably helped thousands of people over 25 years when you put it that way.

Fran: Yeah, the best part of the job is helping customers. I like to get to know their names and really get to know them. We get a lot of positive reviews because of that. I worked hard for those reviews too, but they bring people in, and that leads to even more reviews.

Peter: I am sure that helps when someone says “How are you better than the place down the street?” You just say, “Look at our reviews.”

Fran: Right, and that is part of the way we keep the units rented at such a high rate.

Peter: For sure. Well, you aren't always at work. Do you have any hobbies or things to take up your free time when you aren't working?

Fran: I try to exercise. This year I am going to try hard to stick to my resolution. So far I am doing pretty well. In five weeks I lost 12 pounds.

Peter: Congratulations! That's great! It is so hard to lose weight. I love to eat.

Fran: Right, and I am a traveler, and I like to get home as often as I can, and there is always a lot of food there.

Peter: Where is home?

Fran: Oahu, Hawaii.

Peter: Cool, my grandfather was born in Kauai.

Fran: That is a nice peaceful place there. There isn't much light or noise.

Peter: How close do you live to the facility? Do you live around here?

Fran: I live pretty close. I live about four miles away and I don't have to get on the freeway, so it only takes 10 to 12 minutes to get to work. Not a bad commute at all.

Peter: So you are right down the street basically. Are there any restaurants in the area that you would recommend?

Fran: I love to go to Anthony's Fish Grotto, the battered shrimp is excellent. Oh and a bowl of clam chowder, but there are all kinds of good places by the shopping center behind us.

Peter: So would you say you like seafood?

Fran: Oh yes, I love seafood.

Peter: Do you have family in the area?

Fran: Some, kind of scattered around California. My son went to Portland, and my daughter went to Chicago. So I can go and visit those places now.

Peter: I always loved showing my mom around town in new places, so I am sure they love that. Is there anybody at the company that you would like to give a shout out to that has helped you out over the years?

Fran: Well, I have my friends at the Main Office. Rosie at the call center. Go Rosie! Maria is wonderful too. Those are my two best girls.
