Here at A-1 Self Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our customers is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with Kim, who is celebrating her 5-year anniversary with A-1 Self Storage.
Kim works at A-1 Self Storage on Frazee Road in San Diego, CA.
Shannon: Hey, Kim! What year anniversary are we celebrating today?
Kim: I think this is my 5th anniversary.
Shannon: That’s wonderful! Five years is a pretty long time to stick to a company by today's standards. What were you doing before you worked at A-1 Self Storage?
Kim: Before here, I worked at a different storage facility for a couple of years. I was also going to school.
Shannon: Are you done with school then?
Kim: Yes, I'm done with school. I finished my degree at DeVry. I got my Bachelor's in Business, and Marketing was my concentration.
Shannon: That’s great to hear! So why did you decide to get into self storage?
Kim: It was random, there wasn't any specific reason for it. I just thought I would try it out.
Shannon: Since you worked at a different facility before coming to A-1 Self Storage, did you feel like there were very many similarities or differences between the two companies?
Kim: There were definitely a lot of differences. Some similarities, But as far as operations are concerned there were a lot of differences.
Shannon: How were the operations different?
Kim: Well, moving from that company to here, it was a better experience as far as communication with the people that own the company. Before, communication with the owner wasn’t very open. So working for a smaller, family company was definitely a lot better for that. The operations and everything are also more organized over here, haha! It makes us able to do our job a lot easier.
Shannon: It certainly does! So what is your current position with A-1 Self Storage?
Kim: I'm the Store Manager here at Fashion Valley.
Shannon: I see, so what makes you want to continue working as a self storage manager with A-1 Self Storage?
Kim: I just really like the company because they continue to develop their employees, and support you in bettering yourself in terms of schooling. There is even a scholarship here where they will partially reimburse you for your school expenses.
Shannon: Wow, that’s really something! Do you think you’ll want to earn your Masters eventually?
Kim: Yeah, I plan to continue my studies. But for now, I'm taking a break.
Shannon: Fantastic. So over the years have you had any positive, stand-out customers or customer experiences you would like to share?
Kim: Actually one customer comes to mind. He was a customer when I was managing the A-1 Self Storage Morena facility, and he constantly came in and would talk about his personal life. He was a sweet, older gentleman, and he was single because his wife had passed. Right before I left that store, he passed. I just always remember him. I worked by myself at Morena so it was always nice to have him come by to chat, and see how my day was going.
Shannon: That’s a really precious memory. On the topic of customers, do you like the way customer service is handled here?
Kim: I definitely appreciate the way customer service works here. Customer service is a lot different here. Companies always want to offer customer service, but not all companies hold their employees to that standard. A-1 definitely does that.
Shannon: Perfect! Shifting gears a little bit, I would like to learn more about your life outside of work. What do you like to do when you have free time?
Kim: I do have a few best friends that I spend a lot of time with when I'm not doing something else. I also have a soy candle business.
Shannon: Whoa, that’s awesome! What is it called?
Kim: Kimpel Design. I do have an online shop, but right now I'm taking a little break from it because I've been rebranding my labels.
Shannon: You are really a go-getter! Do you have any restaurants that you like to visit in town?
Kim: I grew up in Japan so I really love sushi, and there is a great sushi place called Kura Sushi Bar. It's a revolving sushi bar, so it has little plates that revolve around you and if you see something that looks good you just grab it and you just pay at the end.
