Here at A-1 Self Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our customers is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with team member Crystal Gonzalez, who is celebrating her 6-year anniversary with A-1 Self Storage.
You can meet Crystal at A-1 Self Storage in Lake Forest.
Colby: How long have you worked for A-1 Self Storage, and what anniversary are you celebrating?
Crystal: Let’s see, I started in 2012, so coming up on six years now.
Colby: What was it that drew you to apply, had you worked in storage before?
Crystal: I had not. It was actually my first full time job, and I was only 19 when I got hired. I honestly didn’t really know what was involved with a storage job before I started.
Colby: Gotcha, so was it at all what you had expected?
Crystal: It was very different. I had worked in the customer service field before. But this job helped me a lot to sharpen my interpersonal skills. There are a lot of different people a lot of different customers a lot of different situations that come up.
Colby: Oh, I’m sure! What advice would you give somebody if they were applying for a job at A-1 and they hadn’t worked in storage before? Kind of like you were six years ago?
Crystal: The main thing to focus on is really sharpening your people skills. You are going to be dealing with a lot of different types of people, so get prepared for that.
Colby: You probably have quite a collection of stories now after working there for six years. Is there anything that stands out as a favorite moment that you experienced?
Crystal: Well, I have a lot of crazy-weird stories, but I wouldn’t say they are my favorites. I guess it isn’t exactly a story, but I remember all the people I have interacted with and gotten to know. No matter what people are storing, after a while you start to get to know them, and that’s the part of the job I enjoy most.
Colby: It’s great that you get to develop friendships like that. Stepping away from self storage a little bit, tell me about yourself. What are some of your hobbies that you enjoy and what keeps you busy when you aren’t at work?
Crystal: I have a Disney pass and I am a huge Disney fan! Sometimes I head there right after work.
Colby: What’s your favorite thing about having the Disney pass? Are you more of a rides person or shows?
Crystal: Oh, I love it because of all the shows. The parade is my favorite. I always love to watch the parade.
Colby: That sounds like fun. Do you have any go-to restaurants close to the facility?
Crystal: I was recently promoted to the manager position here at Lake Forest, so I haven’t gotten to know this community quite yet. One of my favorite restaurants in the area is Empanada Man. It is really good.
Colby: I will have to check that place out. When did you transfer over to the Lake Forest area?
Crystal: It was very recent, it happened in the last month and a half or so.
Colby: Congratulations! I would imagine that managing your own location is quite a different experience from the other work you have done thus far.
Crystal: Definitely, sometimes the responsibility can be a little scary, but so far so good.
Colby: Right on. Is there anybody that you would like to give a shout out to that might have helped you along in your six years there?
Crystal: Yeah, my old manager David Mendoza. He has always been great to me and I have learned a whole lot from him over the years. He really mentored me on how to treat customers and how to not take things personally.
