Here at A-1 Self Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our customers is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with team member Chris, who is celebrating his seventh anniversary with A-1 Self Storage.
Shannon: So how many years have you been with the company?
Chris: This will be my seventh year.
Shannon: Nice! What is your current position?
Chris: I’m actually a floater for East County.
Shannon: I see, have you always been a floater?
Chris: No. I’ve only been a floater for the past two years.
Shannon: Before then, you were at one location?
Chris: Yeah. Before I became a floater I was at Mission Valley, and before that I was at Mira Mesa.
Shannon: Sounds like you’ve moved around quite a bit! I’m curious, how is your job different as a floater than when you were stationed at one location?
Chris: It’s definitely a change. Dealing with more personalities; different customers and different stores. Covering a store by yourself, for example, is something different. As a floater often times I’m alone, so I may have to help customers that are having issues by myself.
Shannon: Is that difficult because you aren’t at those locations every day?
Chris: Yeah, so I have to get informed about any new customers, or issues to watch for, so I know how to deal with it. Every day can be different.
Shannon: Have there been any customers that have left an impression on you working at A-1 Self Storage?
Chris: Honestly, it’s hard to name a specific one. But, If I could say anything, I would say just being able to help people with their living situations has left an impression on me. Being able to help them leave a bad situation, like getting out of a bad relationship. Now they can finally move forward, and feel okay, and they know their stuff is secure.
Shannon: That’s great that you can make an impact on someone's life like that. Is that part of the reason why you continue to work in self storage?
Chris: Yeah, and as you get to meet customers you can meet some really cool people. It’s also great because you can do some networking.
Shannon: Interesting, how so?
Chris: Well if someone is good at, say, plumbing, then I can ask them questions about a situation and they’ll give you pointers. So that goes for a lot of things. Working in self storage is also like taking a journey with people, especially when they’ve been here for so long, which is one thing that I really like about working here.
Shannon: That’s great. What makes you want to continue working at A-1 Self storage in specific?
Chris: Yeah actually what keeps me here is the communication with management. That’s one thing that my old job lacked. When I was looking for a new job at the time, that was one of the big things that I was looking for. Ever since I started working here it's never been an issue.
Shannon: I’m glad to hear that! Has there been anyone at A-1 Self Storage that has been a mentor figure to you? Or been helpful in answering any questions you’ve had along the way?
Chris: I would have to say Patrick. He is the other floater and former self storage manager at El Cajon. He’s been very helpful for questions that I’ve had since I became a floater. He would be someone whose been a mentor to me.
Shannon: Do you have any advice for anyone who's interested in getting into self storage as a manage or as a floater?
Chris: I would say they should definitely read the manual, haha! Read it more than once! Also, just keep your mind open. Don’t take things too personally.
Shannon: Great advice. So veering away from work a little bit, do you have any hobbies outside of work or things you enjoy in your free time?
Chris: Well I don’t know about hobbies, but I’m mostly into baseball and craft beer.
Shannon: Okay then! What is your favorite brewery?
Shannon: Oh that’s the best! And you mentioned baseball, so who's your baseball team?
Chris: The Dodgers!
