Here at A-1 Self Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our customers is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with team member Brittni, who is celebrating her eighth anniversary with A-1 Self Storage.
You can meet Brittni at A-1 Self Storage in Fullerton, California.
Shannon: Let’s dive in! How many years have you been with A-1 Self Storage?
Brittni: Eight years.
Shannon: Oh wow! What is your current position? Has it changed at all over the years?
Brittni: Sales associate, and no it hasn’t.
Shannon: What were you doing before self storage eight years ago?
Brittni: I was actually working at Best Buy. I worked there for five years.
Shannon: Interesting. Did you feel like there were similarities between working in retail and working in property management?
Brittni: Well I still wear the same blue shirt for both jobs, haha.
Shannon: You’re right, that’s true! So is it pretty different then? I would think there would be similarities in customer service.
Brittni: Well, customer service was different because I might be working with up to 50 people at once when I was working at Best Buy. With self storage I only have to handle one or two people, at most, at a time.
Shannon: Oh I see what you’re saying.
Brittni: Yeah, and it’s also different to go from selling individual items, to selling self storage units.
Shannon: How was that transition for you?
Brittni: First year was definitely different. I had a lot of questions, and I took a lot of notes. But it was good!
Shannon: So how did you end up finding a job with A-1 Self Storage?
Brittni: Honestly, I just did web searches online just to see who was hiring locally near me.
Shannon: I see, once you were hired was there anyone who really helped you learn the ropes your first year and over the past eight years?
Brittni: At the time when I started my manager was Dania. Dania transitioned into a different position, but Melissa has been my manager for the last year or so. But those two have really been patient with me and helped me with any questions.
Shannon: That’s great. Is there any piece of advice that Melissa or Dania have given you that has been particularly helpful?
Brittni: Yes! They told me to “take your time”. There’s a lot of times that you might be working alone. Whether someone is off on lunch or sick for the day, you might have to handle the store by yourself. So just to be patient instead of rushing, and messing things up.
Shannon: Sounds like great advice! So is there anything that surprised you about working in self storage?
Brittni: Just the demand and how many people need to store their stuff! And there’s so many different scenarios of why people need storage: students, divorce, flood, things that are out of their hands. There are people that have been here for a few months, and people that have been here for years.
Shannon: Has there been any one renter that you’ve gotten to know over the years then? Or has left an impression on you?
Brittni: Well yeah, one guy specifically who has been here since day one with me. His name is James. Ever since I started, every month he comes in and pays he’s just a very nice guy overall. Every year we do a Toys for Tots drive, and he’s always one of the first ones to drop off toys. One year, he wasn’t able to do the toys but he left an envelope with money for us, and asked if we could grab some toys for him on his behalf. So that has always left an impression on me.
Shannon: Wow that is really great. So what makes you want to continue working at A-1 Self Storage?
Brittni: Right now, honestly, it just kind of works for me and my husband, with where we are at. He is pursuing nursing, so for me it provides a sense of security while I’m supporting him. It’s a good job, and I like working with the people here.
Shannon: Do you have any hobbies or places you like to go outside of work in your free time?
Brittni: You know, I like to spend time with my immediate family like my parents and my sister, and also friends. We like to go to the movies, the beach, or out to eat.
Shannon: Nice! Do you have any favorite restaurants?
