Self Storage Team Anniversary: Brian Smith Celebrates 16 Years of Service

|

A-1 Self Storage has a great team of professional storage experts who give our customers the best service in the industry. As they grow personally and professionally, we want to show our appreciation by highlighting their milestones. Join us in celebrating Brian Smith’s 16th year as part of the A-1 Self Storage team!

You can find Brian at A-1 Self Storage in La Habra, California.

Colby:  So Brian, this is year 15?

Brian:  I’m going into year 16.

Colby:  Very cool! How did you find yourself working in self storage?

Brian:  I knew a person that worked at the company. At the time, I had two part-time jobs, so I was looking for something with benefits and A-1 Self Storage offers a fabulous array of benefits, from 401k, to time off.  Really great. That was one of the main reasons I decided to work here.

Colby:  Gotta have those benefits; they’re so important. What’s the best thing you’ve learned in your 16 years there?

Brian:  In storage, everybody has a story and a history and it’s really important to take people one-on-one as they come and try to help them with the situation that they’re in. Everybody has different reasons why they’re storing.

Colby:  Do you have a favorite self storage story?

Brian:  There’s a lot of crazy stories, but no story in particular, other than the fact that it’s just really nice to help people. Lots of times, people are not at their best when they’re storing. They’re storing because people die or they’re downsizing their homes. Stuff like that. To see people grow past that, to watch them leave, and to move on to bigger and better things is a really nice thing to see over the years I’ve been here. I have people come back and say, “You helped me when I was at my worst and now I’m in a much better place.” That’s really nice to see.  It’s one of my favorite things about self storage.

Colby: When you’re not at work, what are your favorite hobbies?

Brian:  This is very topical because the Olympics are going on, but I’m a curler.

Colby:  Really?

Brian:  I’m on a curling team here in Southern California. I love to do that. When I’m not here in storage, I also brew my own beer and cider, which my friends really like.

Colby:  Very cool! I would not have expected to find a curling enthusiast in Southern California of all places.

Brian:  Yeah, it surprises people to know we’ve got a club in L.A. the Hollywood Curling Club, and the Orange County Curling Club, which I belong to. There are two here, and also one in San Diego, and one up in San Francisco. There’s quite a lot of curling here in California. You just don’t hear a lot about it.

Colby:  Alright, very cool. So a couple last questions, what’s your favorite thing to do in the city?

Brian:  My favorite thing in the city of La Habra is the Corn Festival. They have a big festival every year.  They shut down the whole main street, and there are games and food and all kinds of stuff. I look forward to it every year.

Colby:  Nice. Favorite restaurant in La Habra?

Brian:  It’s gotta be the Cat in the Custard Cup. It’s fine dining and it’s really good. Pork belly!

Colby:  That may be my favorite restaurant name I’ve heard.

Brian:  Yeah, it’s a really nice place. There’s a lot of great restaurants around here, but that’s my favorite by far.

Colby:  Is there anybody you’d like to give a shout out to?

Brian:  Not particularly, all my friends and family.
