A-1 Self Storage has a great team of professional storage experts who give our customers the best service in the industry. As they grow personally and professionally, we want to show our appreciation by highlighting their milestones. Join us in celebrating John Powers’ 12th year as part of the A-1 team!

You can find John at A-1 Self Storage in Belmont, California.

Colby:  Remind me, please, what year are you going into at A-1 Self Storage?

John:  This will be my twelfth year here.

Colby:  Congratulations!

John:  Thank you.

Colby:  When you started working for A-1, what made you decide to work there?

John:  I have a friend, Marisol, who works for A-1 at the Oakland location. She said it was a great company to work for. I was doing construction and just had my first daughter. The job I had couldn’t guarantee 40 hours, stuff like that. So I gave it a try, and 12 years later I’m still here.

Colby:  What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned about the industry?

John:  With the housing market crash and things like that, it’s an industry that I don’t have to worry about job security; it’s there. There’s always someone needing storage. I have a lot of customers who need temporary storage. A lot of people going through life-changing things and being able to help someone who may have just got evicted or something else like that is one of the things I enjoy most about the job. They’re raising the rent in Belmont, there’s no rent control over here, so you get a lot of people who can’t afford to live in this area anymore and that sucks. But they’ll always need storage.

Colby:  That’s an interesting response. Storage kind of falls into that too - whether the economy is good or bad, there’s a demand.

John:  Exactly. Even in this area where we work, there’s Oracle, Facebook, things like that. You get a lot of people moving here for jobs like that and it’s kind of pricey. Lots of people moving in and the houses being built are smaller and smaller, so every day we have people that are needing storage. People come in and say, “The housing market is bad, or this is bad.  How are you guys doing?” I’ll say that you might not want to hear it, but we’re thriving and growing.

Colby:  Outside of self storage, what are your favorite things to do in town? Hobbies? Fun places to go?

John:  I don’t actually live in the town I work in. I drive pretty far. I don’t spend a lot of time in this area. Once it’s 6:00 p.m., I’m usually on the road home. I would have to say in this area, because it’s so multicultural, there’s so many fantastic places to eat and I’ve been trying to try different things that I’ve never had before. There’s a place in San Mateo’s downtown with all kinds of different places. Indian food, Peruvian food. Las Americas was the Peruvian place.

Colby:  Is there anybody you’d like to give a shout out to in celebration of your 12 years with A-1 Self Storage?

John:  I’d like to shout out to my associate Antonio.  And also, Allen, my manager. Without those guys, it would maybe get monotonous after 12 years, but they keep it lively!
