Neighborhoods and Districts

Coyote Valley offers a completely opposite lifestyle that Downtown has to offer. If you chose a home here you’ll find yourself in the midst of wide-open farming land in a rural setting. Spring showers will leave the landscape covered in vibrant greens and yellows and set the perfect scenery to open your window to in the morning. Living atop of rolling hills that cascade down into a green luscious valley does come at the cost of a pretty penny. Homes in this region can sell anywhere from $600,000 to $1.5 million.

Seven Trees offers more apartment style living spaces and has a slightly younger median age of 48 years old according to Nextdoor. Here you can expect to get all the amenities your heart desires from pools to gyms, this district’s apartments won’t let you down. Seven trees is the perfect space for those who do not need a lot of square footage and are looking to spend some time-saving money. Even better yet, you’re right near Capitol Expressway, a quick route to get you where you need to go!

Hiking Trails in South San Jose

While South San Jose is known for being the quieter region of San Jose, there is certainly no shortage of things to do. The incredible scenery has tons to offer. Outdoor lovers will find solace here. The Los Alamitos Creek Trail is the perfect place to bike, take your dogs out for a walk, or go for a run. The trails are all paved making for an easy and relaxing route and perfect for pets and bikes. The trail runs 4.7 miles long and even passes through Pfeiffer Park. Hiking trails are plentiful in the area.

Silver Creek Valley is open to the public and runs near the Silver Creek Country Club neighborhood. If you are looking for a more difficult trail this might be your challenge as it has very steep slopes that can be challenging for some bikers and hikers. This trail extends 4 miles, but hiking up and down the slopes may make it feel longer!

For a longer trail, head north to give Guadalupe River a try! The trail runs 9 miles long with a short 2.4-mile option. You can hike or bike all the way to the San Francisco Bay by way of the beautiful river trail. Others to check out include the Coyote Creek Trail and Lake Almaden Trail.

 Cost of Living

When it comes to the cost of living, housing is the biggest difference in comparison to the rest of the United States. Expatistan.com says that a 900 square foot furnished apartment in an expensive neighborhood costs $2,845. The same size apartment in a “normal” part of town is $2,826. If you’re hoping to buy a home in San Jose, the median home cost is $1,083,000 according to bestplaces.net. Based on their cost of living index, San Jose scored an average of 222. Their index uses 100 to represent the US average cost of living. An amount below 100 means a city is cheaper than the US average. A cost of living index above 100 means a city is more expensive. San Jose’s 222 cost of living index above means that it is much more expensive to live here than the average US city.

Higher Education

For those looking for a 4-year undergraduate or graduate education in the heart of San Jose, take a look at San Jose State University (SJSU). While it is located in Central San Jose, it is not a far commute should you decide to move to South San Jose where the living is a bit cheaper. SJSU is ranked #35 on U.S.News.com’s 2018 Best Colleges ranking, and #20 on its Best Colleges for Veterans ranking. It is known for producing the engineers, scientists, and business professionals that are primarily employed by businesses from San Jose to San Francisco and the entirety of Silicon Valley. If you are in the market for a community college check out Pacific Oaks College and Carrington College. They are both located in South San Jose for a shorter commute. Both colleges offer a 2-year undergraduate education and career certificate programs.

Transportation

Getting around South San Jose is easy thanks to the abundance of public transportation offered by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA)! The extensive light rail system is the best way to access surrounding cities, neighborhoods, and districts close to the downtown area. If you want a free ride to visit some exciting attractions downtown, such as the San Jose Museum of Art, the Convention Center, or SAP Center, the VTA’s free DASH shuttle is the way to go. Want to really get away? You can visit downtown and hop aboard Caltrain which connects downtown San Jose to San Francisco. If public transportation isn’t your style, San Jose has many walkable areas. Residents also often bike to save money and preserve the environment, so hop on your bike and join the locals!
