Self Storage Advice from the Experts

A-1 Self Storage | December 15, 2019 @ 12:00 AM

We asked storage experts from all of our locations to share their favorite storage tips and here’s what they said:

Protect your items from dust. Use covers to protect your belongings from accumulating dust, especially if you plan to store for a long period, or have a drive-up unit. Clothing should be put into garment bags to keep them free of dust. Trash bags make excellent garment bags if you are on a tight budget. Cut a small hole in the bottom of the bag, slip it over the hangar, and tie the bottom closed. We do sell a wide variety of covers for furniture to help keep your mattresses, chairs, and couches free from dust. (Contributing teams A-1 Self Storage El Cajon on Main St, A-1 Self Storage Anaheim)

Take pictures! Take pictures of your unit empty, throughout the move-in process, and once you are finished. This will save you time and stress searching for something you stored and forgot about! (Contributing team A-1 Self Storage Imperial Beach)

Prepare for moving out. Empty the storage unit completely, remove your lock, and stop by the office to fill out a vacate form. It’s that easy! (Contributing team A-1 Self Storage North Hollywood on Vineland Ave.)

Make it functional. If you need the storage unit for business or need to store through items, factor in space to move around. If you let us know we will be happy to give you size estimates to accommodate your items and space to reach them so you aren't wasting time and energy climbing to the back of your unit to find one item. (Contributing team A-1 Self Storage Anaheim)

Look beyond rates. We encourage you to compare and contrast the benefits of units and facility features to find the one that’s the best fit for your needs.  We will gladly help you find a unit in your price range. We can help save customers money by renting a unit upstairs. Our large elevators and pushcarts make any storage unit easy to get to! Our units are clean, affordable, and convenient, and our team will work to find the best storage unit for all your needs!  (Contributing team A-1 Self Storage Huntington Beach, A-1 Self Storage Fullerton)

Steer clear of moisture! If you plan to store a refrigerator, check the fridge for food and defrost before you store it. It must be completely dry and free of food and crumbs. This will prevent odors, water damage to surrounding areas, and mildew. (Contributing team A-1 Self Storage Anaheim)

Compartmentalization goes a long way. Revisit your storage unit and evaluate if there are items you no longer need and can condense or if you have extra space and found you do not need to get to things as often as you thought. You may be able to downsize and save money!
