Meet Your Local Self Storage Facility: A-1 Self Storage in El Cajon, CA

This time around we’re checking out A-1 Self Storage on Magnolia Avenue in El Cajon, California. This self storage facility was the sixth ever built by A-1 Self Storage, and was constructed in 1989.
The facility has 801 units with some featuring drive up access.You can also find a number of carts available to help get your items in and out easily. Units range in size from 10 ft x 10 ft to 10 ft x 30 ft, and the facility is a multi level facility open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.
That being said, the back building is equipped with a freight elevator and a passenger elevator. Self Storage Manager Joe Ochoa made sure to tell us that for safety concerns customers should use the passenger elevator or the stairs to reach their destination. “Freight lifts just take your items up, and then you go upstairs to meet it. If you ride inside of the freight lifts, you can offset the balance.”
When it comes to security, Joe explained the multi-layer system that ensures everyone's belongings are kept safe. “We have 24/7 surveillance, so all our customers can have peace of mind about their things. There is gate control access, which means we don't allow anyone without a unique code into the units. We have individual door alarms as well, so even if someone got inside they are going to set off alarms once they are in. We also have cameras on almost all of the drive ups.”
On top of this, Joe says the team regularly walks the facility at least 3-4 times a day making sure doors that are unattended are closed and have locks that are working properly, and that customers are following the storage facility rules. They also carry a dustpan and broom, in case they see any trash or dirt that needs to be taken care of.
“If we are out there showing units trying to impress a brand new customer, and they walk by a pile of trash, they are going to notice that,” Joe said. “The customers also help us when they see trash or if they have trash they need help disposing of.”
We asked Joe to describe what the neighborhood was like surrounding the facility, but were reminded that the facility is in fact in an industrial area with very few residents. “But we do get a decent amount of foot traffic from the Parkway Plaza on Fletcher. Everyone knows us around that area, and the deli that is next door to us. It's a really famous place that people come to from all over called Antonelli’s Deli. That's how a lot of people find out about us.”
