Meet Your Local Storage Facility: A-1 Self Storage in San Jose, California on Monterey Highway

A-1 Self Storage | November 15, 2018 @ 12:00 AM

The lively and diverse city of San Jose has a lot to offer its residents. From great shopping and restaurants to outdoor activities in and around the city, everyone wants a piece of San Jose life, so space is limited. When even modest homes have cringe-inducing price tags, features like storage become a lower priority. That is, until you realize you just don’t have enough space for the things you want.

Relax! A-1 Self Storage in San Jose on Monterey Highway is the answer to your storage needs. This facility, built in 1998, has 840 units across three floors in two buildings. These units have some unique features that Joanna, professional self storage manager at this location, detailed for us.

“The second floor is as accessible as the first floor, since you can still drive up to the door to make your way inside the building. Going to the third floor, you would have to take an elevator,” Joanna said.

This facility features hospital sized elevators that can hold multiple pieces of furniture while carrying passengers. Drive-up units come in a number of sizes including 10 x 10, 10’ x 15’, 10’ x 20’, 10’ x 25’, and 10’ x 30’.

”We probably have about one or two 10 x 10s that are drive-up. It's pretty rare to be anything below the 10’ x 15’ for a drive-up,” Joanna said. “The 10’ x 30’ and 10’ x 25’ are pretty popular. We will usually get business clients who need to store their items for those.”

Some of the larger drive-up units may also act as parking spaces, depending on the size of the vehicle.

“We would need to make sure that the registration and insurance is valid and under the customer’s name, and that the vehicle is in running condition” Joanna said. “But they're more than welcome to store their car inside of those drive-up units.”

Keeping convenience in mind, the facility also offers package acceptance. However, customers must sign a waiver before the A-1 Self Storage team will accept the package. In case you have heavy packages delivered or personal belongings to move, pushcarts are available. Customers must present an ID, some personal information, and their unit number before a key is given to unlock the pushcarts.

Customers have fantastic access hours at this self storage facility — from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., including holidays. Office hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. On weekends, the facility opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m.

“I hear that our competitors close pretty early, like at four or five. A lot of tenants come over because their access hours end really early,” Joanna said. “Ours is definitely a bigger convenience. It's a big deal for people that are moving their stuff.”

While the facility has its share of commercial clients, a large portion of the rental community are people moving from one place to another within San Jose.

“Especially in San Jose, we have a lot of people moving because rent is going up or it's changing, so people are always moving, and need to store their stuff,” Joanna said.

Since there always seems to be a steady flow of customers creating activity at the facility, it’s important that there are strong security features in place. At A-1 Self Storage on Monterey Hwy, Joanna and her team rely on surveillance cameras and individually alarmed units to make sure everything is kept safe and secure.

“Each door has its one individual door alarm. When you enter your unique gate access code when you come onto the property, you disarm the storage unit. Every time you use the code to leave, it will rearm the storage unit. Or, if you keep the door closed for a good 15 minutes, it will reset the alarm on the storage unit as well,” Joanna explained. “If we get alarms going off on any of the units, we go out to check and make sure that the unit is safe and secure. That's one good thing we have over here that separates us from other competitors - individually alarmed units.”

Exceptional security features, great customer service, convenient drive-up units, and elevators — what more could you need? The experts at A-1 Self Storage thought about that, and decided that adding a retail area with moving and packing supplies was the next step.

“We do sell boxes and other merchandise such as mattress bags, disk locks, desk covers, wardrobe boxes, tape, and things of that nature,” Joanna said. “If you buy 10 or more boxes you'll get 25% off and you can mix and match the boxes. If you go on Yelp as well I believe there are some coupons and deals there too, sometimes.”
